Occurrence of polysaccharide granules in sporulating hyphae of Streptomyces viridochromogenes.

چکیده
Evidence of the presence of polysaccharide polymers is shown in Streptomyces sp. for the first time. Cytochemical methods revealed the occurrence of polysaccharide granules in sporulating hyphae of Streptomyces viridochromogenes. Onset of the sporogenesis coincided with the appearance of the granules, which reached a maximum number during the early stages of maturation. The later stages of maturation showed a decrease of these granules, and in mature spores no granules were observed.

Consumption of atmospheric hydrogen during the life cycle of soil-dwelling actinobacteria.
Microbe-mediated soil uptake is the largest and most uncertain variable in the budget of atmospheric hydrogen (H2 ). The diversity and ecophysiological role of soil microorganisms that can consume low atmospheric abundances of H2 with high-affinity [NiFe]-hydrogenases is unknown. We expanded the library of atmospheric H2 -consuming strains to include four soil Harvard Forest Isolate (HFI) Strep...
متن کاملDifferentiation and anaerobiosis in standing liquid cultures of Streptomyces coelicolor.
Streptomyces coelicolor differentiates on solid agar media by forming aerial hyphae that septate into spores. We here show that differentiation also occurs in standing liquid minimal media. After a period of submerged growth, hyphae migrate to the air interface, where they become fixed by a rigid reflecting film. Colonies that result from these hyphae form sporulating aerial hyphae. In addition...
متن کاملGeneration of a non-sporulating strain of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) by the manipulation of a developmentally controlled ftsZ promoter.
The differentiation of Streptomyces aerial hyphae into chains of unigenomic spores occurs through the synchronous formation of multiple FtsZ rings, leading to sporulation septa. We show here that developmental control of ftsZ transcription is required for sporulation in Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2). Three putative ftsZ promoters were detected in the ftsQ-ftsZ intergenic region. In addition, so...
متن کاملSpecific Lysogenicity in Streptomyces azureus.
Slope (or plate) cultures of thiostrepton-producing Streptomyces azureus (ATCC 14921) often showed spontaneously developing plaques. Plaques increased in number during serial subcultures. The production of aerial mycelia and sporulating aerial hyphae was interrupted by the overlapping plaques, whereas the growth of substrate mycelia continued in the plaques. These abnormal (eroded) cultures wer...
متن کاملThe evolution of development in Streptomyces analysed by genome comparisons.
There is considerable information about the genetic control of the processes by which mycelial Streptomyces bacteria form spore-bearing aerial hyphae. The recent acquisition of genome sequences for 16 species of actinobacteria, including two streptomycetes, makes it possible to try to reconstruct the evolution of Streptomyces differentiation by a comparative genomic approach, and to place the r...
